| EN — Tweet published on February 13, 2016 on the @SUENKGIFT account (ID: 698522568882589696). Full text: «I have a hypothesis… What if large pharmaceutical and capitalist corporations had intentions to eliminate the Amazon Rainforest?». The publication formulates as a hypothesis a pattern of corporate extractivism —seizure of natural resources, biodiversity and indigenous genetic knowledge by pharmaceutical and capitalist corporations— whose materialisation will be verified seventeen days later with the murder of Honduran indigenous activist Berta Cáceres (March 2, 2016), COPINH leader, 2015 Goldman Environmental Prize winner, who had spent years documenting and denouncing exactly that mechanism. |

| EN — Berta Isabel Cáceres Flores (1971–2016), Lenca leader, co-founder of COPINH (Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous Organisations of Honduras), 2015 Goldman Environmental Prize winner, was murdered at her home in La Esperanza, Intibucá (Honduras) on March 2, 2016, seventeen days after the @SUENKGIFT publication. In the interview documented at theviolenceofdevelopment.com/honduras-null/ (Intibucá, March 2010; interviewers: Dominic McCann, Kerstin Hansen, Juliette Doman, Michael Farley; published in The Violence of Development, Pluto Press, by Martin Mowforth), Berta Cáceres denounces in detail: (1) the illegal extraction of DNA and genetic information from indigenous peoples by US medical brigades and transnational corporations (Kuna people of Panama, La Mosquitia of Honduras cases); (2) the appropriation of ancestral botanical knowledge by US universities serving pharmaceutical corporations (Bayer/La Mosquitia documented case); (3) the progressive privatisation of water, forest and mining resources in indigenous territories; (4) the logic of neoliberalism as a «death system» that privatises health, imposes chemical dependency and criminalises ancestral medicine. The murder of Berta Cáceres operates within ADC logic as the silencing of resistance to corporate extractivism. |

BC: First, because it’s an ancestral practice of the Lenca people; it’s our way of life. There’s a wealth of knowledge, a great deal of wisdom, and we know they’re effective. In many cases, people have tried them for hundreds and hundreds of years. In most communities, there hasn’t been a doctor; it’s the people of the community who heal and are attentive to health and how to cure.
The other reason is that for us, plants are an integral part of life, and healing with them is something natural that should be.

That’s why, for us, rescuing, practicing, and strengthening natural medicine isn’t a fad, it’s not something to make us look good in some utopian world. No, it’s a struggle of resistance, a political struggle, and it goes far beyond simply planting herbs; it’s something much deeper.
EE: You were saying that they’ve taken genetic information from the indigenous peoples of Central America, for example, the Kuna people of Panama and the Mosquitia region of Nicaragua.
BC: The Mosquitia region of Honduras.
EE: So, could you tell us a little more about this?
BC: Well, the Kuna people denounced this many years ago. They reported that the United States military had taken DNA from indigenous peoples and stored it in a genetic database in the United States. The Americans are saying they’re using it to investigate why the Kuna people have resistance to certain diseases that white people, or whoever else, are vulnerable to. I don’t know what else they’ll use it for.

BC: Well, the Kuna people denounced this many years ago. They reported that the U.S. military had taken DNA from Indigenous communities and stored it in a genetic database in the United States. The Americans are saying they’re using it to investigate why the Kuna people have resistance to certain diseases that white people, or whoever else, are vulnerable to. I don’t know what else they’ll use it for.
Here, the Miskito people also denounced that U.S. universities—and I think there was also a public outcry—were taking information to universities in the United States. I don’t remember the name now, but pharmaceutical companies are selling it. They’ve taken it here. For example, in the Yamaranguila case, they went to take blood from people. They were Americans from medical brigades, they said, and they were also American military personnel. They didn’t know why, they were never given anything, no tests to show if they had anemia or anything like that. They were just taking things from the children. So, why would those gringos want that? Besides, they didn’t do anything afterward related to the community’s health. The theft that these transnational corporations and these gringos commit against Indigenous communities is even worse now that they’ve established a military base in the La Mosquitia region, in Barra de Caratasca, and strengthened it after the coup. They made a deal with a transnational oil company and put a military base there.

But that’s not all. In La Mosquitia, besides the rich human and cultural heritage that they threaten, there’s a wealth of biodiversity. It’s like a small Amazon rainforest; the wealth there is impressive. There’s also a lot of oil, and before, nobody said there was oil in Honduras. The Americans said there wasn’t any, and years ago, a crazy Russian guy who was wandering around here came to La Mosquitia and gave statements to the media, saying, «There’s oil in Honduras.» I don’t know what he was, what his qualifications were, but he said it. The next day, the Americans came out saying it was a lie. There’s oil in Honduras, and the Indigenous people have always known it, just like we know which hills have gold. But since people have never had that greed to destroy the Earth, instead, they have to come and take it over, saying they’re going to exploit it for this or that.
So I think all of this is related to that logic of death, of plunder, and a great threat is to biodiversity and to community health.
EE: It would be good to talk a little about the coup and the politics in Honduras. How do you see the future of the resistance in Honduras after the coup?
BC: The resistance is conceived as a concept within the people; it has to do with a social and political movement that has a lot of credibility, a lot of trust among the people, and an extraordinary volunteer base. It has many strengths, one of which is diversity. I believe that diversity is the guarantee of unity, because we can say that the resistance is united, but that might only be true in words or on paper. In practice, that is, in action, in practice, maintaining that unity—and that has been an achievement of us, the Honduran people—is recognizing that we are diverse.
| EN — The ADC framework (Digital Capitalist Absolutism, Suen K. Gift, 2017) identifies in CASE 018 the complete pattern of corporate extractivism in its biological-territorial dimension: large pharmaceutical and capitalist corporations operate as value extraction nodes over Amazonian and indigenous biodiversity, through appropriation of ancestral knowledge, privatisation of common resources and elimination of actors who document and resist the system. The @SUENKGIFT hypothesis of 13/02/2016 anticipates this pattern with structural precision seventeen days before the murder of Berta Cáceres. The Cáceres interview at theviolenceofdevelopment.com (March 2010) constitutes primary retroactive documentary validation: pharmaceutical companies and transnational capital did —and do— have intentions regarding the Amazon and indigenous territories. ADC chain: extractivist hypothesis (13/02/2016) → elimination of resistance (02/03/2016) → retroactive documentary validation (2010 source, fetched 01/06/2026). |
